Is Selling Out Twitter Followers Kosher Now?

In email marketing you’ll always find that some of your subscribers’ email addresses are not their primary email addy. Why? Because many people are wary of having their email address sold to spammy businesses.

I mean think about it, you hand over your email address to someone in good faith and two weeks later you’re being bombarded by all types of spam emails from car insurance to 50% off viagra.

So people have found a way around this by supplying their “junk email addy” instead.

Now tell me this, who has a junk twitter handle?

Not me.

Which is why I had to take the time to sign in to twitter today to confirm I wasn’t following the chic that posted this on G+.

So I could unfollow her. Cause of course that’s the way to handle it. And yes, it’s super easy.

But I personally find that THIS bites.

I mean, ok, I have not been on Twitter much, but when did this happen?

When did people start selling out their followers?

How fair is THIS to us who followed?

I mean, HELLO, is it because I’m a virtual contact that you feel it’s ok to sell me out?

To pass me to the highest bidder?

What kinda BS is this?

Someone please tell me, is this what’s been going on while I’ve been away?

Do you feel it’s ok to sell your twitter handle, because it’s “yours” and you can do what you want though it means selling out your network?

  1. Woah! I didn’t know people did this! This is all new to me, so I’m a little shocked. I’ve heard that people buy fake followers, but I didn’t think flat out selling your Twitter and followers happened, too. SMH.

  2. Blech. I don’t understand why people do this. Ugh.

  3. Hi Van,

Got one similat yesterday :D Twitter, Facebook and Google+. You just need $30 for 1000 followers, cool eh?

I’ve been reading lately about fake followers and that’s a serious business when it comes to Social Media. 83 million fakes on Facebook and 360 million on Twitter.

Now social media is a better platform for all the marketers ;) Good for businesses, if they wanna show off. I mean, seriously.

    Cheers…

    • Mayura, supposedly her followers are real and active. And it’s not about buying followers, it’s about selling your own followers to the highest bidder.

    • girl this chic is selling her own twitter account. i guess whoever is stupid enough to buy pays her and she hands over username and password, therefore giving this person her twitter handle and followers.

  4. I guess there are always going to be clever slugs out there figuring out how to take advantage. Thanks for the heads up Vanita!

  5. This is just one other of the many things people will do to make an extra buck. Yes, I understand you do what you’ve got to do to make money and keep yourself afloat, but it comes down to a person’s moral and ethical code.

Personally, I wouldn’t do this unless a company that fit my specific genre and demographic, as well as passing my final judgement on their service or product contacted ME asking if I was interested.

Other than that, I’m not going to pimp out my Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest or any of my other social media channels which is exactly what that is!

  6. It does not shock me so much – facebook pages are being sold every day so twitter was the next target…I have heard sth about buying followers on e-bay but I have never seen these ads…Why would anyone do such a thing – not a clue.
